ANYWAY, John went southwest to see Kartchner Caverns, the Grayhawk Nature Center, Coronado Cave, Bisbee and the Queen Mine tour, Ramsey Canyon, and stayed at the Huachuca Oaks Camp. Doug and John had a great time and John didn't want to leave. They bunked in the Broken Arrow cabin and their tour guide for the whole trip was Mr. Stahl who has run the camp for many years. He is like in his 70's and is able to beat them all in sprints. He is just amazing. Doug enjoyed having talks with him. There was so much to do and so much to see. They did a LOT of hiking and saw a lot of wildlife like deers, squirrels, bugs of all kinds, lizards, birds, wild turkey, etc. When the went to the Grayhawk center they got to see different kinds of snakes and a Gilla Monster. they even got to hold some and have a giant boa-constrictor put on their shoulders.
They really loved the campgrounds. they said they had the best food there including french toast for breakfast with fresh strawberries. The campgrounds had these awesome tree houses that Doug and the boys played games of "take-over" in. At night they did activities such as being introduced to hissing cochroaches and having them crawl on their shirts, as well as getting to touch prehistoric dinosaur poop. Boy am I NOT evious of those things. Anyway, they also got to have bonfires and roasting marshmallows as well as a talent night of singing and dancing.
The Coronado cave is extremely dusty but they had fun crawling in tight spaces and seeing neat cave formations. The mine was an experience as well. The got to wear cool yellow jackets though and hard hats and ride in on a mining car/train (whatever they're called). They went down over a thousand feet and "just for fun" had them turn the lights off on the way back up. Once again, I am so not evious of that experience. I think overall Doug was the perfect one to chaperone that field trip! :)
In Bisbee they saw some pretty interesting small town scenery with very artistic renderings on buildings and cars. The final thing they did was go to Ramsey Canyon and go on a canyon hike. John brought home some fossils and an Orthoceras egg. I have like thousands of pictures because John's teachers took copies of EVERYONEs digital pictures and put them all on one disc for each child. I can't possibly put them all here. For those who want to see I'll upload the ones with John and Doug in them onto my Kodak server and send you an invite to view them.

What awesome field trips!! They are lucky to get to see such neat places!
ReplyDeleteThat is just amazing to me that these kids get to go on such awesome field trips. Does the school pay or do you? I bet Doug had as much fun as the boys did, that would totally be Daniel also.
ReplyDeleteThey do fundraising to help offset the cost of these trips. Also, the tax credit money they get goes towards them. John's was free this year because of the tax credit money the school got. Doug had to pay $50 as a chaperone. Rebecca's trip this year ended up costing $100 as they weren't able to raise as much as they'd wanted. It really is neat they get to go on them!
